Transferring moves a benefit from one beneficiary to another. It does not reassign the existing record in place. Instead, it expires the original Benefit_Allocation__c (sets Benefit_End_Date__c to today and Benefit_Status__c to Expired) and inserts a new Benefit_Allocation__c for the new Contact (status Active, with the same Purchase Activity and end date as the original).

Confirming the transfer details
When you transfer a Benefit Allocation, the original beneficiary’s allocation is expired and a new allocation is created for the new beneficiary. The original record remains, marked Expired.
Transferring consumes a slot when restore is off. A transfer expires the original allocation and creates a new active one. When the Product’s Restore Allocation to Purchase Activity (Restore_Allocation_to_Purchase_Activity__c) is unchecked, the expired original keeps counting toward the Purchase Activity’s active beneficiaries — so the transfer uses an extra slot. If the Purchase Activity is already at its Maximum Allocations, the transfer is blocked. Only when Restore is on is a transfer slot-neutral.
