# Product System Category Overview

> Product System Categories tailor the UI and system behavior to the type of product you are working with, and can be extended beyond the standard categories.

## Overview

A **Product System Category** tailors the UI and system behavior to the type of product you are working with. Unlike record types, System Categories can fully define how fusionCore appears and behaves for a product — and you can create new System Categories in addition to the standard ones that ship with fusionCore.

The standard fusionCore System Categories are:

* **Subscription** — products that renew on a schedule, driven by a Subscription Plan.
* **Miscellaneous** — standard, one-time products such as merchandise or event tickets.
* **Tax** — products that carry a tax rate and rule (see [Taxes](/end-user-guides/products/taxes/index)).
